Simple and Compound time

Simple times: the beats are plain un-dotted beats. The time signatures used for simple times are 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (simple duple time, simple triple time, simple quadruple time)

Compound times: the beats are dotted beats. The time signatures used for compound times are 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 (compound duple time, compound triple time, compound quadruple time)

The most important part of identifying the difference between simple and compound time is the way that the notes are grouped.

 What really interested me was the way that you can play 2 different time signatures at the same time.

 I would like to learn more about playing different time signaturesat the same time.

Grouping This week we learnt about grouping. We had already learnt the basics last year so we learnt more about the more advanced rules of grouping. I am personally not a big fan of grouping as sometimes it can be very challenging. Creating Instruments This week during the first lesson of the week, we learnt about how to create our own African instruments. My group was given the membranephones so my partner and I created a miniature version of an African drum. I really enjoyed this as it was a fun creative activity. I look forward to doing more fun and creative lessons in the future.
